Q ) EXPLAIN THE WORKING OF AN ENRAF LEVEL GAUGE?

ANS -Enraf level gauge is based on the SER powered null balance technique. A displacer serves as continuous level sensing element. A two phase ser motor controlled by a capacitive balance system winds unwinds the the measuring wire until the tension in the weight springs is in balance with the weight of the displaced part immersed in the liquid. The sensing system in balance measures the two capacitance formed by the moving central sensing rod provided by the two capacitor plates and the SI plates.

JINDAL POWER - 2013

February 19, 2013
WHY ATTEMPERATION IS REQUIRED IN BOILERS ?

ANS - One of the methods used to control the final steam temperature in a packaged boiler is interstage attemperation.In this method,feed water of demineralized quality(having nearly the same TDS as the final steam)is injected in between two stages of a superheater system as shown above.Generally in a convective type of superheater design,the uncontrolled final steam temperature decreases as the load decreases,while with a radiant superheater system,the uncontrolled steam temperature decreases as the load increases. Injecting the feed water achieves the desired final steam temperature at a given load. The load range over which the steam temperature can be maintained depends on the boiler design.Generally it is from 50 to 100 % but with special designs,the range can be extended.

When the feed water is not demineralized or has a high TDS(total dissolved solids),the amount of solids that can get into the final steam is high. For example,if the feed water has a TDS of 15 ppm and the spray quantity required is 10 % of the total steam,then a mass balance of solids around the desuperheater results in:

Solids after attemperation=(90x0 +10x15)/100=1.5 ppm,which is too much.[In this equation,steam is considered to have nearly zero solids]. Typically depending on steam pressure and turbine make,solids permitted in final steam could range from 30 to 150 ppb(parts per billion). Hence in such cases, a heat exchanger could be used to cool the steam and then inject the condensate between the two stages. This exchanger could be located inside the drum and be cooled by the boiler water itself. However another option is to use a separate exchanger as shown above and use it to cool some steam taken from the drum and then inject it as spray. The condensed steam has nearly zero solids and hence is considered suitable for spray

what is the difference between the 2 wire level transmitter and 4 wire level transmitter?

AnsIn case of 4 wire transmitter, 2 wire is used to give power to the transmitter and other 2 wire to transmit the signal. In case of 2 wire , the 2 wire carries the power as well as the signal. Example- 4 to 20 mA is flowing through the 2 wire and according to level the current is changing.

Why would an Engineer sometimes consider combining FEEDBACK and
FEED FORWARD control in some applications?

ANS -  In some applications, the compensation provided by feedback control is not sufficient & accurate .Also, the feed forward control is faster but it is difficult to predict all the manipulated variables.Hence a combination of both is  used.

HOW TO CALCULATE THE EVAPORATION LOSS IN COOLING TOWER

December 20, 2012
CALCULATION OF EVAPORATION LOSSES (1000 M3/HR):

Latent heat of evaporation is 540.5 k.cal./kg of water say 550 k.cal./kg.

Heat load = m x cp x (th – tc )
Where cp = specific heat of water = 1

th = hot water temp. = 450C

tc = cooled water temp. =350C

m =weight of water kg.

550 k.cal. = m x 1 x ( 45 – 35 )0C = evaporation of 1 kg of water
m = 550 = 55.0 kg of water.
10 x 1

i.e. 55.0 kg of water cools by ( 45 – 35 = 100C ), releases 550k.cal.of heat

Therefore when 55.0 kg of water is cooled from 450C to 350C it evaporates 1kg of water.
Therefore % of evaporation = 1 x 100 / 55.0 = 1.8 %

Therefore for 1000 M3/ hr. water evaporated = 18.0 M3/hr

Thus to cool 1000 M3 / hr of water from 450C to 350C, 18.0 M3/ hr of water is to be evaporated

This can be achieved by supplying air with the help of fan or by nozzles.
Fans and the nozzles are the instrument to supply air to evaporate 18.0 M3 / hr of water and hence there is no difference in evaporation losses because of nozzles. For same delta ‘T’ based on the above we have to calculate the numbers of nozzles, which is equivalent to the fan as far as quantity of air, is concerned.

what is the operation principle of cooling tower

December 20, 2012
Ans-
PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION:

All the cooling towers are working on the principle of water evaporation. On evaporation of water, both heat and mass transfer takes place, and water gets cooled. Rate of evaporation is increased by increasing air velocity. In case of cooling tower we call this an air draft. This air draft is created by mechanical system of power driven fan. We create the same air draft in our cooling tower, by using specially designed spray nozzles.

Evaporation is a natural phenomenon. Water will evaporate till air in contact with it gets saturated with moisture. Evaporation cannot be more than the saturation point of air. Thus total evaporation will depend upon the moisture holding capacity of air, which depends on humidity.

When hot water is sprayed from top of the cooling tower through our nozzles, it gives jet effect and air is sucked from the area surrounding each nozzle. Air and water travel in co current direction down to the basin. During this travel, air cools down the water to desired temperature, and escape through FRP louvers.

Thus our cooling tower does the same performance as done by the Fan Operated Cooling Tower, without the use of fan.

With the above characteristics our cooling tower has dual benefits, one there is no power requirement and second there is no break down / no maintenance. Another important advantage is that, because there is no fan, there is no scope for electrical spark or friction spark. It can be installed safely in the, inflammable area.

Explain the role of split range control in control valve?

August 31, 2012
Answer-
split range control is which the output of a controller is
split to two or more control valves. For eg,
For 0% controller output,valve A fully open & B fully
closed.
For 25%, Valve A 75% open,B 25% open
For 50%, Valve A& B- 50% open,
For 75%, Valve A 25%open, B-75%open..
For 100%, Valve A fully closed & valve B Fully Open..

Like this, the controller output action can be set depending
upon the application.
as well as in split range control the control signal is split in two
ranges according to the application .for eg,4-20MA.signal
can be used as 4-12 MA. FOR VALVE A OPEN i.e.50%.& 12-20MA
for vlv B open.vice-versa.
