Story India fourth largest energy consumer in the world: report

The two biggest state-owned oil companies, ONGC and Oil India, dominate the country's upstream gas sector, the report said.

According to EIA, India became the world's sixth largest liquefied natural gas importer in 2011. Indian companies have begun investing in new regasification facilities to meet rising demand.

NHPC seeks higher returns in hydro projects

Faced with sluggish progress in hydro projects, state-run NHPC has approached the Power Ministry seeking steps to ensure higher returns on investment in such projects. Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission

In a move that comes as a relief to solar power developers in Tamil Nadu, the state's electricity regulator has empowered the state electricity distribution company, TANGEDCO, to administer the 'solar purchase obligation' mandated by the state government's solar policy. "The SPO will be administered by TANGEDCO," Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC), said in its recent order.

COAL INDIA- 1600MW

Coal India the world's largest coal producer plans to take a proposal for setting up a INR 9,000 crore power plant in Odisha to its board for approval in the next couple of months. The 2x800 megawatt plant at the mouth of a coal field in the Mahanadi basin will mark the coal producer's foray into the power sector.

TATA POWER - SYNCHRONISATION OF 800 MW

Tata Power has synchronised unit five of 800 MW at its 4,000 MW imported coal-based plant in Mundra, Gujarat. The first four units (800 MW each) have been commissioned between March last year and February this year. With this, the 4,000-MW plant is fully operational and raises Tata Power's total capacity to 8,500 MW.

With unit five online, the thermal power generation capacity of the company is at 7,647 MW. Generation through clean sources such as hydro, wind and solar add up to 852 MW....
